If you want to address me by name, please call me Mel.
It’s a shortened version of my middle name, and I’m more comfortable with it than with my first name. I’ve used it in some contexts for a very long time, and I’m figuring it’s best to just tell people up front.
It’s okay if you forget and call me Amanda. It’s even okay if you never make the change, because I know it’s hard for some people to do that – it’s even hard for me and it’s my own name. I just wanted people to know my preferences. Pretty soon I’ll be officially changing my name to reflect this, to a name that combines the two names, with Mel as a shortened version of that. But really in everyday life I’ll just be Mel.
