There’s were the only stories I ever heard.

So I was forever dreaming I was someone outside my own skin.

Yep.  Also the fairytales I’ve found that actually had black people in them, were horrible.  (There was this one, in one of those “(color) Fairy Books”, that involved a black girl being there and the white characters cutting out her tongue which they couldn’t use because it was black, and all this other horrible stuff.  The representation that existed was worse than no representation.)
