I just found a BADD post that tied my brain in a knot.
It claimed that the word disablism or ableism is bad because it presumes that disability is an inherent quality of a person, when disability is the oppression we face and impairment is the inherent qualities, therefore it should be impairmentism, or… something like that.
I ended up writing an irritable reply, mostly irritable because even trying to comprehend that kind of thing gives me a headache. Like a literal headache, which I have right now, because my brain won’t do that.
I can’t do the thing. Where all your words have to line up perfectly, all your ideas have to be perfectly logically consistent.
And I also can’t stand the thing. Where someone tells me what I mean by a word just because they think the word is logically inconsistent with something else that I never even said.
And while he wasn’t talking just to me obviously (or to me at all)… he was talking about anyone who uses the word, and he was saying that he knew what everyone meant by it, basically. Because the word just had to imply this and that and ARGH.
Brain doesn’t work that way.
Please stop trying to make things work that way.
