A non-whitewashed fantasy cover for once! And the character is much as I imagined her.  I hate the cover of the one I have. But this is not the English edition. (Momo by Michael Ende.)
Aside from one tiny scene this is my favorite book ever ever ever. And practically nobody has heard of it.  A homeless orphan girl with a talent for listening has to save the world from men in grey who are trying to steal time.

Reblogging this because of #weneeddiversebooks.  In this book, Momo’s physical appearance is never really mentioned, so I found it amazing that in a world where covers are routinely whitewashed, this particular version of the cover has Momo as a black girl.  This is my favorite cover, and closest to how I pictured her while reading the book.
Warning that there is one scene in which they’re play-acting and the character she’s playing is an “exotic island native girl” or something like that, a sort of thing which happens in a lot of Michael Ende’s books without the author noticing.  That’s the “aside from one tiny scene”.  This is still my favorite book ever.  It’s one of those children’s books that has a deeper meaning spiritually than people expect or always notice, kind of like some of Madeleine L'Engle’s stuff.
A quote from the book:

Momo listened to everyone and everything, to dogs and cats, crickets and tortoises — even to the rain and the wind in the pine trees — and all of them spoke to her after their own fashion.
Many were the evenings when, after he friends had gone home, she would sit by herself in the middle of the old stone amphitheater, with the sky’s starry vault overhead, and simply listen to the great silence around her.
Whenever she did this, she felt she was sitting at the center of a giant ear, listening to the world of the stars, and she seemed to hear soft but majestic music that touched her heart in the strangest way. On nights like these, she always had the most beautiful dreams.
Those who still think listening isn’t an art should see if they can do half as well.
