Having a chronic illness is extremely stressful.
Being sick and in pain all the time. Not being able to do all of the things that you love to do. Constantly trying new medications and treatments. Hoping that the medications you’re on will actually work. Getting even sicker or having serious complications and side effects from treatments. Always having to go to the hospital.
Never knowing what’s coming next.
A scary surgery or procedure? A trip to the hospital that lasts for weeks or months? More tests or new medications? Missing school or work? Doctors that won’t listen or won’t even try to help?
It’s all just so overwhelming.
But sometimes just the littlest things can put a smile on your face and make you feel better.
Someone asking how you’re doing and really listening to you because they genuinely care. Going outside and seeing a beautiful sunset or flowers starting to bloom. Listening to your favorite song or watching your favorite movie. Seeing a story on the news that’s actually happy and positive. A smile or other small gesture of kindness from a stranger. Seeing something in your favorite color. Reading an inspiring story or quote. Watching a beautiful dance.
When you come across one those little things that can somehow take an incredibly difficult and stressful day where you’re extremely sick and don’t think you can take it anymore, and just turn it all around…
Write it down. Draw a picture of it. Take a photograph of it. Make a collage. Or anything else you can think of to document it.
And then put it all in a book. Find a really pretty notebook, sketchbook, or journal that you love, or decorate a plain blank book. Make it your own “happy book” - a book that will just make you smile whenever you look at it.
So that on those days when you’re super sick, sad, scared, or stressed, you have a little reminder of the things that make you happy, make you smile, and make you feel just a little bit better.

This is actually not a bad idea, and not just for chronic illness.

I do this already. It’s like Tumblr, but paper and not for sharing. It’s definitely soothing, and also a good way of digging out what I really like. What speaks to me.
