I know a woman who’s going into med school

And I keep telling her to keep her arrogance and her ambition, because these are things that will help her get through something that grueling.  I think she finds it kind of amusing that I will openly praise arrogance.  It’s not that I think arrogance is, say, a good trait in a doctor.  But a good trait for getting through med school?  Hell yeah.

And I feel like as a woman who’s got her fair share of both arrogance and ambition, people tend to look on her as a “cold bitch” unless they know her.  When if she was a man with those same traits, they’d praise for her being driven to go out there and get what she wants in life.

I’m not always the biggest fan of arrogance.  But I think that when you’re in a situation that’s trying to whack you into the ground as hard as it can, arrogance can help you get back up again and believe you can do it regardless of the odds.   So I’ve told her to hang onto it at least until she’s through school.  And hopefully the job will teach her whatever humility she needs.
