I have this strong suspicion that 95% of the “Don’t self-diagnose, ever!” people just really want to be bigoted against the mentally ill and accuse them of “faking it”, but they find it harder to do so against those with official diagnoses, so they instead attack a group of vulnerable people who either don’t have access to decent and/or affordable mental healthcare, or feel too mentally ill and fragile to deal psychiatrists and psychologists to begin with.

It’s so easy to abuse those people, it’s so easy to hurt them by invalidating things they know about themselves. Of course they will be the ones who will be attacked.

It could be that.  But I’ve also had a suspicion that at least some people who get extremely wound up in trying to root out the fakers, are people who fear on some level that they themselves are fakers (or in a few rare cases, actually are), and want to throw the suspicion off of themselves by becoming fanatical about it in others.
