Asterism in gemology is the “star” effect that occurs in various gemstones. The six (and sometimes 12) pointed star is displayed when light hits certain gemstone cabochons with a high concentration of inclusions like rutile and hematite. Another effect similar to this is chatoyancy, or cat’s eye.
Some common “star” gemstones are sapphires, rubies, and spinel. The cat’s eye effect is often seen in stones like tiger’s eye and moonstone.
This picture is of a sterling silver ring I made for myself with a dark blue star-sapphire.
