allies-person:

I am very antsy about how the hijacking story will be handled. I think some of the objections people have to the storyline as a whole are kind of bullshit—namely, people who can’t stand the idea of a character being mentally disabled, especially a character they perceive as being good, wonderful, talented, etc. Also the people who whine about agency, as though disability were not a real thing that affects people. Nevertheless, the story is walking up against a very thin line about violence and craziness. Quite possibly crossing the line at times.

I’m just very antsy about how this is all going to be handled. Visuals are key, and I can too easily see this going all awry.

But I don’t trust anyone who refuses to see the disability implications of this storyline and tries to incorporate it solely into a non-disabled feminist perspective.

If I were a fan of the books (as opposed to someone who read them because I felt compelled, felt like I should like them, but mostly found them boring), I’d be concerned in all the same areas, very much so.

And I think in general “I don’t trust anyone who refuses to see the disability implications of this storyline and tries to incorporate it solely into a non-disabled feminist perspective” sums up my fears about how non-disabled feminists treat disability in both stories and real life.
