waltzingwithmonsters-deactivate asked: i find functioning labels useless because i'm verbal and able to socialise somewhat under certain conditions and yet there's absolutely no way i could write like you even if i have no real problems with keeping up with jargon and neologisms and things and you do; i'm "smart", i got very high verbal scores on standardised tests, i was probably hyperlexic as a child but COMMUNICATION is so very hard that sometimes i just totally despair at my ability to do it

Yeah that’s exactly why I don’t like functioning labels.

Sue Rubin needs 24-hour care and calls herself low-functioning and needs assistance with communication and just about everything else, but she went and got a college degree and I could never do that.  People just can’t be mapped on a scale like that.

I understand why some people call themselves low-functioning in certain circumstances but it doesn’t mean I agree with it.
