ookami-kaze asked: Hey, so I was wondering if anyone else has had this experience: Sometimes at night, before I've even started falling asleep, my head gets full of absolute gibberish words and phrases, like small snatches of many, many conversations being had all at once, and sometimes a single word or phrase will suddenly be so loud inside my head that I can almost literally hear it. I have no idea what this is.

This happens often to me but it’s usually right before I fall asleep. I don’t know what causes it. I can speculate and come up with a few ideas but I don’t know that any of them would be accurate. Unless it’s causing you distress I wouldn’t worry to much about it, I don’t believe it’s a symptom of anything but If you’re concerned it would be good to speak with your doctor and get their opinion.

Anybody else experience this?

- Q

It’s a hypnagogic state.  It’s actually within the realm of normal experience (i.e. not even considered a mental illness or anything), but it can be made worse by certain conditions like narcolepsy.  Look up hypnagogia, hypnagogic, or hypnagogic hallucinations.  The equivalent state upon waking up is called hypnapompic.

hey, noneofthisisplausible remember when we talked about this? It has a name!

(also in my case, definitely this

apparently it’s rare, I’m like a unicorn!

it ties into how my auditory hypnagogic halucinations are very shouty, up until the point when they actually wake me up

it makes me actually quite anxious)

Oh holy crap exploding head syndrome?

I always wondered what that thing was because I hear a loud pop or crack inside my head and it wakes me up.
