When I went to university, it did not work out, in a big way.
As in, I made myself completely unwelcome everywhere, never made it to class more than twice, and quite dramatically could not take care of myself or even stay afloat physically or psychologically. I was told that people like me did not belong on university campuses.
The worst part though?
I still knew people who went to that university. And one of them told me that she knew someone who was autistic who applied for help from the same disability office I did. And one thing he was told repeatedly was “we tried someone like you… it really didn’t work out.”
Which made me feel horrible on every level. Every possible level.
