stopanthropomorphizingme asked: hey, so. i keep seeing posts come across my dash saying you can't reclaim cripple if you're not /physically/ disabled, or even that being physically disabled isn't enough, you have to be mobility impaired. and i profoundly disagree, but i'm bad at articulating my feelings, even to myself. i just go into a cognitive dissonance spiral and start questioning the basic reality of my existence, so. i was wondering what your thoughts are?

This really isn’t a question that can be answered briefly, so I’m gonna let myself go into full on pedantic mode here.

The issue of which disability groups can reclaim “cripple” or “crip” cannot be discussed without considering hierarchies of acceptance (who is most accepted by the general, non-disabled public), politics of visibility (who is considered disabled, who is considered a person deserving of disability rights), and the history of the disability rights movement/independent living movement in the US. I’ll start with the history.
