epochryphal asked: Question: from what I can tell, "neuroatypical" and "neurodivergent" were coined by autistic people originally, but have since broadened to a more umbrella function, and now include people with mental illnesses and other psychiatric, cognitive, or developmental disabilities. Is this accurate? I certainly feel weird about applying neurotypical to people who have mental illness. (Relatedly, your posts about allistic's origins have made me frown about that word, and I'm exploring alternatives.)

Neuro-atypical and neurodivergent were never autistic-specific.  They were always general terms for people whose neurology is different from the norm, whatever that norm happens to be.
