Chanterelle mushroom.
Chanterelles are edible mushrooms that are pretty highly prized because of their flavor. But they are almost impossible to farm because the mushroom is actually the fruit of a fungus that lives in symbiosis with oak and pine trees. It wraps itself around the roots of the trees and pulls minerals out of the rocky soil to feed to the tree.
The trees also feed them sugar (which the trees make by harvesting sunlight), so they don’t really know how to live without them.
There are lots of chanterelles up in the mountains around here in Southern Arizona. But please be careful - don’t overharvest them and risk hurting the trees.
There are also similar mushrooms that are poisonous, so caution!
