patternsmaybe:

I know a few very rural people who do use hunting to supplement their family’s food supply and cases like that guns are important.

also for a lot of people, knowing they…

One basic difference I can see is whether or not people have had reason/opportunity to view them as useful tools like knives. Which can indeed be used to stab somebody, but that’s not the only thing a knife is good for—and pretty much everybody is aware of that. Before you even get to some condescending attitudes thrown in on top of some very different experiences.

Besides the possibility of dangerous wildlife, I do know more than a few people back home who hunt and/or fish out of necessity. My own diet has been a lot better at times growing up thanks to that too. Hell, I knew one guy who was vegetarian himself but still hunted deer for his family without much regard for the legal season, because they really needed that extra food source.

Yes that thing about them being useful (if dangerous) tools… that’s how I was raised to view them, but that’s not how a lot of people were raised, it seems.

  11. slashmarks said: also sometimes hunting is very very culturally important, or ecologically vital to an area. the area I grew up, the first day of deer season was a school and I think work holiday.
