I am really suspicious of the claim that only “intellectuals” can consider the effects that their behavior has on other people and change what they’re doing because of this. Even if the consequences aren’t obvious, or the process of doing so goes against “common sense.”
Thinking about other people isn’t something that requires fancy words and a university education.
But I always go silent when my friend makes this claim, because I can’t line the words up in the right way to explain why this isn’t right.
I find that entire idea so thoroughly offensive. And yet so many people hold it, and don’t say it out loud, and then you can’t even tell them they’re wrong because they’d deny that they even believe it.
