Interviews with self-advocates. Transcript below. It turns out that these are all captioned pretty well if you turn on captioning in Youtube. Some areas of the captions had [???] and I tried to fill them in when I could hear what they were saying, but sometimes I couldn’t hear either.
“Can you tell us your name and where you’re from?”
My name — my name’s George Garcia, I live in Cheyenne, Wyoming. It’s 82209 the zip code for Wyoming. I worked at Wendy’s for six years in Cheyenne by the highway going to Denver. I’m with the [???] Kiwanis Club. I’m the president.
“Oh you are?”
I was president for People First of Wyoming, and I wrote a bill for — uh, Susan was here for a little bit — she gave me a piece of paper for this word the R, we wanted the legislature voted on it. Senators — it was 29 to 1 — one guy he didn’t vote for it — he’s from Colorado.
“Oh really?”
Yeah. And another one she voted yes from uh… [???] for disability month, and we got that still 59 to 1 the guy from [???]. I worked with [???] disability doing [???] books for people in school for everybody who need help; I’m with the DD Council and I go places trips, and I talk to people in Wyoming and.. I was president of People First of Wyoming - we started it in ’95 and I traveled around Washington D.C. When I was smaller my mom took me to see President John F. Kennedy at the hitching post and Robert Kennedy when he was trying too. But Obama wasn’t there in Wyoming and Hilary Clinton she was in Cheyenne. [???] election for her. People voted for her for President… Obama… you know, packed and barely get in.
“It was packed?”
Yeah. And I’m with the “Win”.
“What’s that?”
People with disabilities making [???] and going to meetings with other people. We talk about, with other kids with disabilities have, uh, have handicap stuff for them - swings, and that. We build front porch swings.
“It sounds like you’ve done a lot of advocacy work. Can you just tell us why you think it’s important to be an advocate?”
To help people out in the United States. I’m 55 years old. I work, and I go places with Kathy — she’s coming here, she’s my — I’m her boss for People First of Wyoming, we travel — I got elected yesterday.
“Great, to what position?”
Once somebody gets sick I go, they call me up. George Bush, and Clinton, and all that, they came to Cheyenne. Wyoming’s the Republican state. I’m a Democrat. Wyoming’s Republican.
“You’ve met a lot of legislators?”
And I’d like to run for House Speaker for disability. I didn’t win, I lost.
“You lost? But that’s pretty impressive that you ran for that.”
I went to Washington D.C. to talk. We had a meeting there, a lot of people from different states. Wyoming, I went to Washington for our casa house talking about people help us out and Washington D.C. the senators Senator ?? and John ?? he was an eye doctor. I got a plaque for disability.
