Please, for the love of everything that is good, do not clean up Maya Angelou’s life to fit your own respectability politics. Yes, she’s one of the most well-respected authors, poets, and activists to live, but she also was an underage mother, stripper, and prostitute and all of those parts of her made up all of who she was, not just the parts that are convenient for your personal agenda.

I hate the way this happens, not just in political situations but with everyone, everyone gets cleaned up after they die, and then you can’t recognize them anymore.
