The most effective way to promote employment, I feel, would be to start giving people the basics they need for survival. Because it’s incredibly hard to get a job and keep a job when you’re hungry, cold, sick, exhausted, and drowning in despair.

Yes this.

Also most people want to work, if they can.

Work is something people like to do.

I would work, if I could.  In the absence of the ability to do enough work to pay me a living wage, I do other kinds of work that either don’t pay, or don’t pay much.  Not because I have to, but because I can, and I want to.  Most disabled people I know are in the same boat.

And it’s impossible to do damn near anything if you’re drowning.  You’re too busy trying to keep your head above water.

I hate working. I’m not apologetic about that fact. I hate the idea of my survival being tied to a capitalist employer’s whim. I hate selling my time in order to survive. I hate it.

I don’t think I’d seek out paid employment if the US passed a guaranteed livable income, but I would do things. I’d do music; I’d garden; I’d do things that theoretically could be considered work. But I wouldn’t want to be on someone’s payroll.

I wouldn’t mind getting commissions for compositions or selling produce to neighbors or what have you, but I wouldn’t want to be an employee.

I think my definition of ‘working’ is broader than 'capitalist jobs’.
