What really weirds me out is the one where you say that retard is a slur and people say:

But what about flame retardant?  What about the word “retard” meaning “to slow down” (a word which is pronounced completely differently from the slur – the slur is REE-tard, the other word is ri-TARD)?  What about in music?

I don’t even understand why they’re asking those questions.  Those aren’t the same word.  At all.  Nobody is asking them to stop using those words.  They’re saying them to stop saying REE-tard.  Which is a horribly offensive word that they know full fucking well what it means.  And the number of people on earth who have to keep saying REE-tard could probably all fit into one room, and wouldn’t be making arguments like this anyway.
