That tendency for professionals to take over grass roots self-help movements is toxic. I’ve seen it in the battered women’s movement (now called domestic violence to please finders and run by social workers). It happens in some independent living centers. This tendency is important for allies to understand, recognize, and fight.

I’ve seen it in a lot of CILs, if not most that I’ve encountered.  I think any time something gets government funding it gets even more vulnerable to that than it was before.
