for what reasons or symptoms can women be misdiagnosed bpd instead of aspergers

Some traits that bpd and aspergers share in common (though the origins of the traits are often different):

  • impulsivity (or in the case of AS, specifically difficulty with behavior inhibition)
  • atypical affect (facial expressions, expression of emotional states)
  • unstable personal relationships
  • fear of abandonment or insecurity in relationships
  • intense irritability/anger or mood instability (i.e. meltdowns in autistic people)
  • difficulty regulating emotions

Also traits of BPD are often traits from severe abuse.  Lots of autistic women have been severely abused.

It’s also worth adding that personality disorders are nebulous, flawed concepts that are frequently misdiagnosed and generally used as a way for psychiatrists to segregate “difficult” patients into categories. I was misdiagnosed with avoidant personality disorder and dependent personality disorder with borderline features about a month after I turned 18 and got tossed into the state hospital, and I almost ended up with the schizotypal label as well. I don’t actually have a personality disorder and I have never have.

Psychiatry as a whole needs to come up with a better way of conceptualizing personality psychopathology. “Borderline personality disorder” is more often than not an understandable reaction to traumatic events, and I wish that complex posttraumatic stress disorder would become an actual diagnostic category because psychiatrists are more readily sympathetic toward people with posttraumatic stress disorder than personality disorders even though they often share many of the same features.

Agreed.  I don’t actually agree with any of the personality disorders as anything more than psychiatry grasping at straws.

I was diagnosed as possibly schizoid just before I was diagnosed with autism.  Meanwhile, schizoid is not supposed to be diagnosed at that age at all (and when it is, it pretty much always turns out to be autism).
