This also cropped up in a conversation I was having with someone, the one who wanted it to be easier to commit people involuntarily to psych institutions, so that people who wanted to kill people could be locked up somewhere.

There’s this thing.

It’s a known thing. Even…

Violent offenders should be kept separate from non-violent inmates in any institution. Period.

They often don’t draw distinctions between different kinds of violence, though.

Like there’s violence towards yourself, which they’ll consider just as violent as violence towards anyone else.

And when it’s violence towards others, they don’t distinguish type or scale or meaning or direction.

Like there’s people who are considered violent because they break or shoot objects, who have never harmed another human being, ever.

There’s a large group of people who are only ever violent towards institution staff, never towards other inmates.

The institution staff themselves are allowed to be as violent as they want towards inmates, and will fabricate reasons.  They are never considered dangerous even if their violence results in death.  (Which is always considered accidental.)

And there are people who are violent towards other inmates, which can range from minor to major violence, and from physical violence to sexual assault.   Often if this happens, the victim will be blamed for being so stupid as to be near to the person who harmed them.  Even though, generally, you can’t get that far away from anyone in those places.
