can we also talk about…

nihilight:

patternsmaybe:

The kind of ~acceptance~ where parents don’t try to teach their kids anything or plan for their adulthood and think of that as loving them the way they are?

with all due respect.. what happens, then, when that kid is released into the adult world? if they’re not taught anything about time management, work, bills, etc… what happens then? or do you mean deeper things than this? i take “don’t try to teach their kids anything” quite literally. i feel that i probably should’ve taught my daughter more coping skills so that this past year from HS to college wasn’t such a stressful experience for her.  that kind of acceptance, or sheltering, and ‘you’re going to be okay no matter what you do,’ … can also backfire.  please know i’m not criticizing this; i had my daughter very young. young enough to remember all the things i’d “never do as a parent” that many people say but then have kids in their 30s and it all goes to hell.  so i’m not just talking out of my ass — i’m talking because i had to live that leap while also raising someone.

I think you’re misunderstanding the original post.

The original post is about… a lot of us believe there’s a form of acceptance that’s totally compatible with good parenting.

But occasionaly parents come along who misinterpret “acceptance” as not actually parenting their kids.  And the OP sees this as a huge problem, and so do I.  So we’re pretty much on your side here.
