Anybody know if “eccentric” (when describing a fictional character) is basically just code for autistic in some cases?

“Eccentric” was literally the first descriptive word used on me in my first psych evaluation ever.

As in “This is an eccentric 13-year-old…”

It’s often been used to indicate that something is ‘off’ about a character. There’s also a class element - rich people are ‘eccentric’, poor people just go mad.

That same shrink later told me that I could not get away with being eccentric.  He said if I was rich I could be eccentric, but because I was not rich I was just crazy and would have to live with that.
