I saw a beautiful thing today.

I was out thrift shopping and when I was in line, there was a lovely person in front of me. Wearing suspenders, slacks, a bowtie, and a lovely button down, they were the picture of androgynous fashion and stylish genderneutralness. After passing over their debit card and paying, the person bagging their purchases politely said “Thank you, miss.”

There was a slight moment of discomfort. Then, very nicely, they said “I’m sorry, but I’m not a woman.”

Taken aback, the Goodwill employee then asked “Then what should I call you?”

“It’s called ‘Preferred Pronoun’” said the lovely human in front of me in a caring voice, “I prefer neutral pronouns like ‘they’ and ‘them’ because I don’t see myself as a man or a woman.”

After a moments thought, the cashier nodded their head and smiled. “I like that! Have a nice day. I’ll be sure to remember that for the future.” 

The person in front of me left with a huge smile on their face, and I felt an incredible warmth in my heart. If only all people could be as understanding as the cashier.
