I’m probably late in coming to this realization, but I just realized that while criticizing people you don’t like is really easy, criticizing people you do like and respect is really, really hard. When actually criticizing people who will actually listen to you is a more productive thing to do than ranting at a wall.
It’s sort of like how it was easy for me to hand out Cs and Ds like candy when I was grading for students I didn’t know, but then when I actually started teaching it became harder.
People have often thought I don’t like them because I criticize them – either as people or as organizations. They don’t realize that, often (not always) I criticize organizations I like more than I criticize ones I don’t like because I want them to be better.
