anyone?
I think it depends on the autistic person.
I know that:
1. I had a very atypical reaction to pot. As in, so many visual hallucinations I could not see through them. Utter panic. Total sensory disintegration to the point that none of my senses held together and everything was in fragments. Paranoia. And no, it was not laced – nobody else smoking the same stuff had anything but a normal reaction.
2. I had a very atypical reaction to LSD. In relatively small doses, it made my senses function better, less confused, less overload, more normal, more able to function. In higher doses (but it took a whole lot, to the point it would be dangerous to most people at those doses) it affected me more or less normally.
This is not an endorsement of either of these drugs. In fact, I think that for an autistic person, trying drugs is even more dangerous than it is for a nonautistic person. Because our brains vary so much even from each other that we can have wildly unpredictable reactions. LSD made me calm and made my senses work better, I know other autistic people who landed in mental institutions. I had horrific responses to pot, I know autistic people who swear by it for anxiety. You just. Cannot. Know. And IMHO it’s not worth the risk.
