Anonymous asked: I did the “but I’m like that and I’m normal” a lot with things. Like I would think a lot of disabilities didn't require accommodation because I HAD that issue and I DIDN'T get accommodations so why should they? I just assumed everyone was struggling the same way I did because I got a lot of "well everyone is ___ sometimes" and stayed that way for like 20 years because no one seemed to think I had anything wrong. I wonder how many other people do something like that.

I think it’s pretty common.  I really made a jerk of myself about it with this friend whose entire family had ADD, and I was always saying “It doesn’t exist” and “But I’m like that” and he started saying things like “Well maybe you HAVE ADD” and it just annoyed me, but it can’t have annoyed me anywhere near as much as I annoyed him and everyone else I did that to.  I occasionally run into people who do that with autism too, and it’s nearly always people who are either on the spectrum, near the spectrum, or have family who are on or near the spectrum.
