The Western Scrub-Jay (Aphelocoma californica) is the ‘blue jay’ of the western United States. Unlike the Blue Jay and the Steller’s Jay, the scrub-jay does not have a crest. Like other jays, it can be assertive and quite vocal. They eat mostly insects and fruits during the spring and summer and nuts and seeds in the fall. They can be seen in backyards and parks as well as in oak woodlands and scrubs. P
