it’s so weird to me to see this happening as someone who’s been on the internet around ten years now and tends to read things and not talk to people (up until tumblr)Yeah. I tend to stay at the fringes on purpose because it’s a more comfortable position for me, but even then it’s strange. I’m seeing debates I had 10 years ago play out, but somehow on tumblr everything seems…more extreme I guess. And it feels like people don’t think to look to see if others have written or talked about things, like everyone has to do it on their own without looking into other older writings.
god, so true. and language gets redefined constantly with no acknowledgement that a word/concept that’s “awful and shitty” now, used to be OK last year. with no acknowledgement that people come from different communities, countries, generations, where different words are used, and that they just might not realise not to use a word. Or that some people have language disabilities that makes it hard to keep up with a huge abstract ever-changing vocabulary.
It’s so confusing and makes me wary of participating in many social justice-oriented conversations.
[sorry to butt in :-) ]No apology necessary! And yeah, that’s another strange thing about tumblr. It’s like the purity drives run out of targets so they have to make up a new set of criteria. The things everyone cares about and is outraged over can vary week to week, and a couple of months later everyone’s forgotten. But in the moment, the thing is always and eternally wrong/bad
It’s very hard for me as someone who came into the trans community in a very, very different time.
I just erased an entire post on the topic because I can’t handle the fallout of simply being from a different time and place. That says a lot.
