You have no idea how many times i’ve scooped one of these up to save it from purposfully being stepped on

This is a Woodhouse’s Toad or Anaxyrus woodhousii 

Probably most versatile and wide-ranging toads in regard to distribution (Black 1970). Temperatures of 20 to 30 degrees C most favorable for nocturnal activity. During day remain under cover of rocks, or burrowed in soil or damp cover near water (Hammerson 1982). May live over 20 years in the wild (Engeman and Engeman 1996). 

They play an important role as both predator and prey. They really make a difference in bugs (especially crickets  at least near our house) are often prey to the numerous species of snake that are around here.

This was a very well behaved little buggar and sat still for me
