In general, women are more likely to suffer from chronic pain conditions—and likely to report more pain—but are less likely to be offered prescription painkillers for them. More specifically, the medical establishment’s reaction to fibromyalgia stems from a long tradition of not believing women who speak about their experiences and their bodies.

(This is intensified for Black women, whose bodily sovereignty is even less recognized and who are expected to bear up under any level of pain without complaint.)

When a woman’s pain is treated at all, it’s often treated as psychological. Despite the well known and even medically recognized phenomenon of the “Man Cold”—men overreacting to mild illnesses—medical practitioners would never believe that a group of men decided en masse to play up a phantom pain in order for sympathy or attention or to simply malinger from work and social obligations. But that’s exactly how women with fibro or similar chronic pain conditions are treated.

I’m not saying that men don’t encounter these types of obstacles when it comes to having their disabilities recognized. But in the specific case of fibro, the perception in the medical community of it as a woman’s condition plays a role in how prevalent denialism is.
