the reason dignity of risk exists as a concept — it occurred to me that anon might not have context for this — is that often, care providers / guardians of disabled people want to prevent us from experiencing anything bad. because they don’t think of us as adults. or they don’t think of us as whole, real people. they want to keep us Safe, and don’t let us make autonomous choices. everyone who makes autonomous choices will at some point fuck up. ‘fucking up’ is a human right but a lot of people don’t think of it that way. but many disabled people are acutely aware that we’re being denied it.
