Willfully persisting in misgendering people is very bad behavior, no matter who is doing it or why they think that’s justified.

It does harm. Please don’t do that.

Yes. *And it hurts innocent bystanders*.

Misgendering an awful person hurts innocent people who are trans.

Oh yeah, that’s another thing to add to our list of things we could stand to never see again: deliberately misgendering people or refusing to believe that they’re trans to punish/humiliate them, because you don’t like them or had a fight with them.  Or acting like because this person is a jerk or behaving badly, this somehow makes them Not Trans— as if trans people can’t be jerks for the same reason anyone else can be a jerk— and therefore you have free rein to misgender them and declare “they’re not REALLY a man/woman, they’re just a wannabe.” (Because pretending to be trans allegedly gets you all this “status” or something.)

There are a lot of reasons why people can’t transition that have nothing to do with “not wanting it enough.”  I’m also tired of seeing people list the self-sacrificing litanies of everything they gave up and risked to transition, and then treat that as the gold standard of “being really trans” or “being trans enough”— that if you are “trans enough” to be worthy of being acknowledged as such, you will give up anything and do anything to transition.

(Not to mention that not every trans person feels a need or desire to change their body, legal gender, or presentation.)

And not all can change our body or legal gender, given the limitations of the medical and legal systems respectively.
