I think that book-canon Katniss is a woman of color, and book-canon always trumps movie canon for me. Actually, the entire phrase “movie canon” just feels wrong to me.

I think Jennifer Lawrence’s performance has generally been strong, but I don’t doubt that there are plenty of young and relatively unknown women of color actors who could do it just as well if not better. I think the casting call was ridiculous and obviously discriminatory.

That about sums it up. Other people have explained this better.
