The Texas government, under Governor Rick Perry, has decided to spend $1.3 million daily to “secure” the border between U.S. and Mexico (Read more). The Texas government’s decision comes in light of their announcement of a “surge” of undocumented immigrants crossing through the border Texas and Mexico share.
Due to the large influx of immigrants, communities along the border have been helping them with donations of food, clothing, and medical supplies. Many cities have reported “busloads” of immigrants (many unaccompanied children) being abandoned at bus stations, churches, and other charities by ICE and Border Patrol officials. These cities include McAllen, Texas and Laredo, Texas.
It is time to tell the Texas government and your representatives to not further militarize the border. That is not what is needed. What is needed is funding to help these people as they are being deported from the U.S.
No amount of militarization will ever bring about the end of undocumented immigration because it’s a much more complicated issue than that. The further militarization and the recent presence of armed militias will not resolve the policies and warmongering the United States has used in Latin America to exploit its people and resources which has led to the current situation.
