And it’s also worth adding that the social model of disability also applies to folks who don’t want to be autistic. Like, however disabling autism may be for them, we are disabling them even more by not treating them as people and we need to stop, now.

I actually wish the cure debate stopped getting brought up in every discussion about autism cuz people get the idea that human rights are only for people who are happy and have lots of skills and don’t want to be cured and actually the people who are most disabled and most unhappy would benefit the most from fixing society. IDK, maybe it’s because I’m not autistic or maybe it’s because I see this as a choice for each individual person to make, but I…don’t care about cures. No cure exists in any case, so it’s really a debate about alternate realities that distracts from the bigger problem of autistic people being abused and killed.

Even if they’re being abused or killed in the name of a cure…You can want a cure and NOT be OK with that. It’s called being a decent human being.
