Not on tumblr, I’ve seen sign language use by non-Deaf people complained about, which would be stupid enough if it were about abled people, but it was about nonspeaking autistic people.Headdesk. I’d love for said people to compile a list of what the appropriate means of communication are for people in each particular demographic. Because apparently, people who struggle to have their communication understood need to adhere to an elaborate set of rules about how they ought to be communicating. Ugh.
On the general issue of sign language use by non-Deaf people, do people realize that some hearing people grow up with sign language as a native language? Or, I don’t know, the fact that hearing sign language speakers are necessary so that there can be interpreters?
Really, the mind boggles.
I actually have heard this one complained about on tumblr. Or else, someone nonverbal asking if they could learn sign language or if it would be ‘appropriative’. Or something like that. It was horrible. I did my best to tell them that any way you can communicate when you’re nonverbal is important, and not appropriative.
