privileged-person asked: with regards to cultural appropriation-- my rule of thumb is "wearing a culture as a costume." Putting on an "Mariachi" outfit if you're white, for example, even though it's not sacred to its culture of origin, is pretty appropriative. (And when in doubt, I ask people from the culture themselves.)

Yeah that’s one rule of thumb that can work in a lot of situations.  It’s complicated.
