soilrockslove:

And not to hijack on that last set of posts on cultural differences in stories…  but I would love to see all sorts of different stories.  When I was in school, the things that got me yelled at the most were not having enough conflict and not writing dialogue.  And I was told “there can’t be a story without dialogue”.  But what if it was a story about interactions between people who *don’t* speak.  Or any kind of entity, a new kind of alien, squirrels, ants, grass… whatever.  Different stories from different cultures *and* different neurotypes and body configurations (because those can change your outlook too).  I want to see all the different ways stories can Be.

(Not that I’m necessarily the person to write them.  Those were the least of my writing problems.  I don’ think I actually want to be ~*a Writer*~ and I’m kind of coming to terms with that.)

I really can’t stand that thing about “there can’t be a story without conflict” or “here’s the diagram of what a plot looks like, if you don’t do this, you’re doing it wrong, period” and stuff.  That’s not how I see the world and it’s not how my stories would work if I could write them well.  In fact I do write stories, sometimes, and people mostly see them as poems because they don’t fit the standard ‘story’ framework.
