I’ve seen this taken to ridiculous extremes.

As in, I knew someone who would say “I hate [n-word]s.”

And if you told her off for it, she’d explain very carefully that she didn’t mean she hated black people, she only hated [n-word]s, and that [n-word]s were stupid black people, and that therefore she wasn’t racist.  She utterly and totally refused to get it.

She loved using slurs in general, like every other word out of her mouth was a slur for something or other.  She insisted that it wasn’t fair that some people could reclaim slurs and other people weren’t allowed to say them, and that the only fair thing was for everyone to be allowed to say every word… and she did say every word.  She also used her disability as an excuse to use slurs, thereby giving those of us with actual language problems that make it hard to change our vocabularies a bad name.  (“Language problems” was not the excuse she gave, however, because that wasn’t actually her problem.  In general, she was just a piece of work.)

But seriously she’d talk about how awful “racists” were and use the n-word in the same breath.
