…actually, we have a lot of minerals in our collection (tourmaline, rose quartz, etc) that are considered “not gem quality,” or would only be considered appropriate for jewelry or something if they were heavily cut and polished. And the idea of that makes us feel kind of like “No! No!! You’re not doing that to my babies!”
I mean, not that we’re literally attributing human feelings to it or anything but… it seems perfectly “okay” being the way it is. And we always “say” to it, “even if the rest of this culture says you’re not good enough and not pretty enough to be a ‘real’ gemstone, what you are is just as beautiful to us.” There’s something that feels more real and living to us— and I don’t mean in any New Agey way, I can’t explain it well— about a “rough” mineral or one embedded in a rock, than one that’s cut and polished to the point of being indistinguishable from glass.
