what slurs are autistic people allowed to reclaim?
It really depends on the autistic person.
If it’s seriously used on you on a regular basis, that’s my rule of thumb.
Like, for instance, I feel comfortable reclaiming retard in certain contexts, because it has been used against my my entire life, and only more and more so as I get older (because often autistic people look more and more strange for our age as we get older). But autistic people who don’t get that word thrown out of cars at them, etc., I would feel very uncomfortable with them reclaiming that word. And I still only use it in certain specific contexts where I am very careful, I don’t just throw it around willy-nilly like I own the word.
