On Disclosing and Discussing Diagnoses, especially on the Internet: (Some Short Thoughts, under a Long Title)

Intro

I have been thinking about how I talk a lot about being Autistic. I mean, I am Autistic, so I blog about it and autism in general. But I have other diagnoses that I never really blog about. I disclose these diagnoses on my About page, but do not discuss them in detail. And that is okay.

To the general populace

Sometimes people are triggered by discussing diagnoses. Sometimes people do not find it beneficial to their mental health. Sometimes people like to keep those discussions in real life and off the internet. Sometimes people cannot disclose for safety reasons, or similar things. Sometimes people aren’t ready. There are lots of reasons and all are fine.

To the bloggers who don’t disclose or discuss

You don’t have to blog about every one of your diagnoses, whether you have gone to a professional or self-diagnosed. Having a diagnosis does not obligate you to discuss, analyze, or disclose it. 

Not blogging, discussing, or disclosing your diagnoses does not make them less valid. It does not make you less valid. It’s not “hiding something” or being “deceitful” if you don’t want to disclose or discuss. You don’t even have to justify why you don’t do these things, if people want to know.

If you aren’t ready, it’s okay, and it’s also okay if you never are ready.

It is okay if you don’t talk about diagnoses.
