With the thing about not having to tell the whole truth to protect your privacy, I forgot to add something and it won’t let me edit.
In some cases, depending on who it is you’re dealing with, it may well be wiser to keep a surface level of politeness going. That doesn’t mean that the person who is behaving disrespectfully deserves or has somehow earned the polite response. Expedience is not the same as obligation.
That’s another important distinction I had to learn.
