Today I heard an autism parent literally say she was considering buying a tracking device for her son since he was becoming a teenager and might start trying to decide things for himself.

Jesus Christ. I hope that kid’s going to be okay.

I am really glad they didn’t have tracking devices when I was a teenager.  (I was a “wanderer”.  For a reason.  They never think you have a reason.)

Christ there is a difference in putting a GPS on a toddler eloper and a teenager. Good god.

Putting a tracking device on anyone w/o their consent is fucked up k bye

Keep an eye on your kids don’t put
fucking

trackers on them

because parents are omniscient and knows where their child is at all times. That doors are forever locked that children don’t drown or get hit by cars.

I never said anything about non consent, but if you have a child with eloping issues and (notice how I said toddler) a GPS might save their life. I read enough stories of dead babies to be ok with a tracking device for a kid that bolts off.

Hi. I was runner and I am still one. I don’t wander for ‘reasons’ I wander or elope because I get lost in my thoughts and I just move. I get lost all the time as a child and it took years of body awareness and moving out of the quiet parts of my mind to realize where I am. Please don’t take my words and misconstrue them as I am ok with non-consensual tracking for teens being independent. Please keep in mind that what you think is ‘fucked up’ might actually save a child’s life. Please keep in mind that parenting and sitters and teachers can’t always see every breathing second of a child and it takes  that breath that space for a child. A teacher’s head will turn to help another kid and they are gone.

You can disagree with me fine. Unfollow me if you are that fucking serious IDC. I have read enough stories drown kids (allistic and autistic) to realize a GPS for a short time might be helpful. Kids still get kidnapped, kids still get abducted.

Just a thought before you go on about how fucked up GPS is.

But whatever, I am wrong you’re right and shit.

totally agree with devilsmoon’s points; although I find the ‘Find my Friends’ thing kinda creepy, I don’t find it that bad most of the time because it’s not very invasive—however, if they had done it without telling me and or gone further (made a camera, etc.), I’d be much more angered by this. Although I don’t appreciate the GPS tracking very much, I also know that it’s a small price to pay to give my parents peace of mind when I’m away (I’m a college student now), they have never used it to stalk me when I’m out with my friends, and also I do understand the very real danger of being young in an urban area.

I guess it’s a fine line between “infringement of privacy” and “protectiveness/prevention”, same as any argument used in National Security pros/cons. I wouldn’t be for the parent microchipping her kid, but if she were to just use it every so often to check up of her kid, while still allowing him to grow and have his own space, it’d be ‘creepy’ but still nothing very. Especially if her child has autism, because as much as I hate to say it, people with learning/developmental differences do tend to get picked on by their peers and knowing where her son is might prevent some sticky bullying situations in the future.

And “eloping” because you get lost in thoughts is a reason.

When I say we have reasons, I say it because most nonautistic people assume that autistic people just wander because we’re empty soulless automatons who don’t have reasons for anything we do.

We have reasons for everything we do, even when we ourselves don’t know the reasons.

And we’re never empty shells.

that is horrific. if she is considering a GPS merely because he is a teenager with autism, that is stifling his desire...
