Snee and the sunflowers.

Snee was walking through a field one day, when she chanced upon two sunflowers.  They were weeping, and a pile of their seeds was around their feet.

“Why are you weeping, sunflowers?” she asked.

Sunflowers can’t point.  But they looked at the seeds around their feet with a mournful expression.

“But I thought you wanted to spread your seeds.”

“T-t-t-t-too s-s-s-s-oon…” said the sunflower on the left.

“W-w-w-eee w-were s-s-s-saving them for someone special…” said the sunflower on the right.

“I can pick up your seeds and put them back in your faces, if that’s what you want,” said Snee.  She had never seen an unhappy sunflower before now, and she didn’t want to start.

The sunflowers practically fell all over themselves in gratitude.

Snee forgot where she was going, and spent all day long picking up sunflower seeds from the grass and putting them into the faces of the sunflowers.  But there weren’t quite enough.

“Th-th-the birds got those, it’ll-it’ll have to do…” said the sunflower on the left.

“Hey, have you guys got names?” asked Snee.“N-no, S-s-s-sunflowers know each other without needing names.  We’d probably get offended if p-p-p-people started going around naming us.  It might make us forget who we are.”

“Well my name is Snee,” said Snee.  “And I’m very happy to meet such wonderful Sunflowers as you.”

“W-w-w-we know you have a problem, Snee.  And we might not be able to fix the whole problem, but we might be able to give you some help.  It would make us feel b-b-b-better to help you in return.”

The sunflowers followed Snee home.  Snee tried really hard to catch how it was that they moved, but whenever she looked, they were sitting still.  But somehow, they were flying, or gliding, or walking, or even hopping, alongside her, and she couldn’t tell which.

She could tell that when they got inside her house, they somehow found a patch of dirt by the window and made themselves at home.

“S-s-s-s-see… we’re m-m-m-m-m-agical sunflowers.  Every time we make seeds, we can just make more.  And more.  And more.  Give us a table with some bowls on it.”

Snee had to work hard to find a surface that wasn’t either filthy or being used.  Same with the bowls.  But she found a small table and two old plastic bowls, one blue and one red.

Then she watched in amazement as the sunflowers dunked their heads into the bowls, dropping all their seeds.  Then turned their heads to the sun, and turned back with a full head of seeds.

She sat down at the table and began eating the sunflower seeds.  No matter how many she ate, there were always more.  And as long as the sunflowers had their patch of dirt by the sunny window, they were happy enough to give her all the seeds she could ever need.

It wasn’t, of course, enough. You can’t live on sunflower seeds, and breaking them open is tedious.  But one person’s help is never enough.  And often, the gesture itself means more than the actual amount of seeds a person can digest at once.  So Snee ate the seeds when she could, and didn’t eat them when she couldn’t.  But mostly she was happy to have the company of a couple of stuttering magical sunflowers by her window.  They were quite well-versed on a number of strange topics and liked to spin bizarre tales for Snee when she was too hungry for sunflower seeds to help much.

*squeals* :D :D :D :D :D Thank you!

*goes on squealing*

I am so happy you liked it!  It just sort of came to me, these sunflowers wanting you to pick up their seeds, and it went from there. :-)

*giggles* It was the first thing I saw on my dash when I got back from the store. :D

I am so glad.  It feels good when someone makes me something of my own, I wanted to pass on the feeling, ever since katisconfused made me that wonderful cat drawing.  I love this aspect of tumblr, where people can do things like this for each other on the spur of the moment, whether it’s stories, art, or just a kind word.
