When people say “Don’t tell me not to fight hate with hate,” I’m confused.

Because I can kind of get it if it’s almost a way of “reclaiming” the word: “You called me ‘hateful’ because I said something passionately and stood up for my beliefs. If that’s hate, welcome to the land of profound hatred.”

But if people actually mean they think fighting real hate with real hate is wise, they pretty much sound like every tropey supervillain ever who discovers the Incredibly Powerful MacGuffin Where Using It Slowly Destroys You and has some elaborate rationalization for why it won’t happen to them.

Also, people who fight hate with hate aren’t *nearly* as good at aiming it as they think they are.

Hate has a way of seeking safe targets, and targeting heresy rather than evil.

Hate poisons communities, and targets the most vulnerable members, much more than it targets actual enemies.
